Safe Harbor Adoption & Orphan Care Ministry's purpose is to increase awareness of the Heavenly Father's passion for looking after orphans by loving them like Jesus.

Active compassion is necessary!

Love that is demonstrated through:

  • global orphan care
  • Adoptive/Fostering families
  • encouragement of those who bring orphans into their homes
  • teams who give hands-on involvement are vital to the journey of orphan care
  • mobilizing churches, institutions, and groups that contribute prayer, visitation, and finances

We are adopted by our Heavenly Father into His family- God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do and it gave him great pleasure (Ephesians 1:5, NLT).

His active compassion drives us to make a difference in the life of a child-an ETERNAL difference!

It only takes one to reach one!

Why Adoption and Orphan Care?

Safe Harbor Adoption & Orphan Care offers no NEW ideas, but seeks to be an instrument that proclaims biblical ideas. Our call is to reflect God's image as Redeemer, defender, provider and Father. Our cause is for those who have NO VOICE.

Proverbs 31:8 (The Message)
8-9 "Speak up for the people who have no voice,
for the rights of all the down-and-outers.
Speak out for justice!
Stand up for the poor and destitute!"

Seldom do we hear about the great needs of orphans. Attending Conferences and concerts, they are rarely the keynote speakers. Though they may be the subject of a news broadcast, the TV channel can be changed. We live in comfort, as if the orphans do not exist. Orphans do exist and God's people are called to defend, protect, and deliver them from oppression.

Helping the poor is not something God asks His people to do. It is something, throughout all generations, God instructs us to do. Orphan care is an expression of practical Christianity. When we truly listen to the heartbeat of the Heavenly Father, God's people are moved from tears to action!

Safe Harbor Adoption & Orphan Care makes God's people aware of the tragedy that is taking place around the world and in our communities. Together we can change the situation. Together, we can discover God-sized ideas for solutions to the crisis.

Why Adoption and Orphan Care?

What God says in Old Testament

All people are created in the image of God-

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27 (NKJV)

7 Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils, and the man became a living person. Genesis 2:7 (NLT)

Because all people are created in God's image, His chosen people are to bless all people-

3" I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you." Genesis 12:3 (NLT)

Because God's people are to bless all people, He establishes laws to protect and provide for the fatherless-

18 "He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing." Deuteronomy 10:18 (NIV)

19 "When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don't go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do. 20 When you beat the olives from your olive trees, don't go over the boughs twice. Leave the remaining olives for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. 21 When you gather the grapes in your vineyard, don't glean the vines after they are picked. Leave the remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. 22 Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am giving you this command." Deuteronomy 24:19-22 (NLT)

Because God's people are to protect and provide for the fatherless, He reminds them of their responsibilities-

17 Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans.
Fight for the rights of widows. Isaiah 1:17 (NLT)

To Stand for Nothing and Stand Up for No One
Jeremiah 5:26-29 (The Message)

26-29"My people are infiltrated by wicked men,
unscrupulous men on the hunt.
They set traps for the unsuspecting.
Their victims are innocent men and women.
Their houses are stuffed with ill-gotten gain,
like a hunter's bag full of birds.
Pretentious and powerful and rich,
hugely obese, oily with rolls of fat.
Worse, they have no conscience.
Right and wrong mean nothing to them.
They stand for nothing, stand up for no one,
throw orphans to the wolves, exploit the poor.
Do you think I'll stand by and do nothing about this?"

God's Decree.

"Don't you think I'll take serious measures against a people like this?

Because God desires His people to carry out their responsibilities to the fatherless, He cries out from His heart-

Psalm 68:5-6 (NLT)

5 Father to the fatherless, defender of widows—
this is God, whose dwelling is holy.

6 God places the lonely in families;
He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. But He makes the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

Psalm 82:3-4 (NIV)

3 Defend the weak and the fatherless;
uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Proverbs 24:12

...once our eyes are opened, we can't pretend we don't know what to do. God, who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows that we know, and holds us responsible to act."

When it comes to caring for the people on God's heart, indifference is sin. (Tom Davis, Fields of the Fatherless)

Why Adoption and Orphan Care?

What God says in New Testament

Christ's instruction is to fulfill the Great Commission, by being an instrument in rescuing the weak and fatherless-

19 " Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

Christ's instruction is to have a guide that is much greater than human expertise or experience - Holy Spirit-

4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

The Ascension of Jesus

6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?"

7 He replied, "The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:4-8 (NLT)

Christ's empowering kills selfishness and cultivates His own compassion and love for the fatherless-

44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. Acts 2:44-45 (NLT)

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's great blessing was upon them all. 34 There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them 35 and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. Acts 4:32-35 (NLT)

God's gracious work of adopting us into His family is expressed in our lives through Adoption and orphan care-

16-17This is how we've come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God's love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.

When We Practice Real Love

18-19 My dear children, let's not just talk about love; let's practice real love. This is the only way we'll know we're living truly, living in God's reality. 1 John 3:17-19 (The Message)

Adoption is a culture within our churches. A culture that sees adoption as a part of Great Commission Mandate and as a sign of the gospel itself.

Why Adoption and Orphan Care?

Our Response

When it comes to caring for the people on God's heart, indifference is a sin.

To move toward God's heart, each one of us can enter into someone's pain, sit with them, and know them.

Food, shelter, clothing, and medical care are NOT enough. Each of the fatherless MUST have a primary caregiver. Research demonstrates that without a caring adult, a child experiences severe emotional and intellectual consequences.

But I am afraid to take the next step!

In light of what scripture tells us about God's perspective, we should be much more afraid of remaining comfortable. Instead of controlled by our fear, may we choose to respond by faith! Faith is simply making ourselves available to God.

Our response can be more than writing a check. Captivated by the love of the Father in heaven, we are compelled to show His love to the fatherless. When we pay attention to the treasures of God's heart, we put ourselves in a position of blessing.
